Why Cramming is Not Effective

Students often believe cramming will help them pass an exam; however, research indicates otherwise and suggests it increases stress while decreasing test scores.

It’s Not Effective

Crammed learning, also referred to as surface learning, involves memorizing facts for short-term purposes and is easily forgotten due to being stored in short-term memory rather than long-term storage.

It’s Self-Fulfilling

Cramming is a study technique many students rely on in order to prepare for exams, however this practice can put undue stress and pressure on both student and instructor, as it prevents proper understanding and recall of material within a limited amount of time.

Cramming often leads to poor results and can even result in exam failure, since students who cram may believe they know all the material but in reality are simply regurgitating superficial knowledge gained in one last attempt at studying at the eleventh hour.

Many study guides advise against cramming for exams, and most professors agree that studying over an extended period is best. Planning ahead for any upcoming exams you are taking can make your studying much more effective; don’t put off planning until last minute!
